Aldi Announces Yorkshire Expansion Plans

Aldi has revealed its plans to open more stores in Yorkshire and the North-East, as part of its drive to build 100 new shops over the next two years.

The cut-price supermarket will invest £1.3 billion into commercial real estate to meet demand from customers.

Among the locations where it is looking for premises are South Bradford, Meadowhall and York in Yorkshire, and Stockton, South Shields and Malton in the North East.

Communications director at Aldi UK Richard Thornton noted the expansion plans are in response to its growing customer-base: “We’re continuing to gain even more customers – with over sixty per cent of UK households shopping with Aldi in the last year.”

He stated: “Our focus is on expanding our store estate, making sure Aldi is accessible to as many of these new shoppers across the country as possible.”

Aldi currently has more than 920 stores across Britain, but wants this number to exceed 1,000 by 2023. It is, therefore, looking for freehold locations in town centres or on the edge of urban areas that are big enough to fit a 20,000 square foot store, as well as 100 parking spaces.

They also need to have good visibility and access, as well as be on or near a main road.

One of the main reasons the budget supermarket is growing in popularity is due to its low-cost products.

Indeed, a recent survey from consumer group Which? found Aldi was the cheapest supermarket in the UK when comparing a basket of 22 everyday essentials from various stores.
